The conference series was founded in Birmingham in 1992.
The founding fathers at that time in alphabetic order were:

- Dr. B. Shirvani from the University of Central England in Birmingham, United Kingdom
- Dr. U. P. Singh from the University of Ulster in Jordanstown, Northern Ireland
- Prof. H. J. J. Kals from the University of Twente, The Netherlands
